To begin with, let’s muse upon the definition of olive oil for a second. Basically, that’s just
oil that people obtain from olives. Everybody knows that! However, there are many types of olive oil that differentiate by the
production process.
- Extra virgin olive oil
If you’re a fan of our blog, you already know it as EVOO, right? It’s
unrefined, which means there are no chemicals or high temperatures associated with its production. Actually, that’s what makes it
a TOP olive product when it comes to high quality.

- Virgin olive oil
Next in the quality list goes virgin olive oil. We’re missing the
“extra” thing here, right? This means it’s quite similar to EVOO with just a few differences. People produce it in almost the same way and it’s also unrefined. However, virgin olive oil has slightly different
acidity levels. While lab results show that EVOO contains no more than 1% acidity, in this one it might go up to 3%. What’s more, in case you’re
an olive oil enthusiast, you might notice there’s little less intensity when it comes to its gustatory properties. In any case, it’s a
‘must try’, for sure!
- Olive oil
Oops, we’re starting to miss the words here! Some also name it “pure olive oil”, which is basically the same. To put it short, this is what you can call
‘regular olive oil’ because it’s most often a mixture between virgin olive oil and refined one. Pure olive oil is usually more off-grade than those we mentioned above. It tends to have lighter color, neutral taste and acidity, which goes between 3 and 4%. Good news is you can use it for any type of cooking you like!
- Light olive oil
Don’t be confused with some other brands that put
“light” on their labels, though! The word here doesn’t mean it has fewer calories. It’s more of a
marketing term that traders use to describe the olive’s lighter taste. What you need to know is that this product goes in the
refined category. In addition, it has higher smoke point and can be suitable for cooking, frying, grill or whatever.
