10 Fun & Curious Facts about Bees and Honey

“What good is the warmth of summer without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.” Don’t you think?! As we are already waiting for the first snow to come, everything starts to gradually change. Imagine a nice resting day at home in front of a warming fireplace. All this with the scent of apples and cinnamon, a cup of hot tea in hand and, of course, honey!

Today we offer you 10 fun and interesting facts about bees and their own produce:

  • However strange it may seem to you, bees turn out to be the only insects on Earth that produce food suitable for people.
  • Here’s something more about these little creatures. Bees are said to have 170 olfactory (odorant) receptors. This means they have a very strong sense of smell. In fact, they use it to catch signals from other bees and to find food.
  • In addition to the previous point, these insects’ sense helps them differentiate between hundreds of flower types. And all this from a long, long distance! Plus, they can also understand which plants contain pollen and which don’t. How amazing is that?!
  • „Bzz-bzz-bzz” Sounds familiar? Well, bees’ distinctive buzz actually comes from their wings. They are thought to make the astounding 200 wing-beats per second! If you do the math, you’ll learn that a single bee can fly 9,5km without any rest and can speed up to 25km/h.

  • Did you also know that one beehive has to fly a distance that equals going three times around the globe? And the final result is only one kilo of honey. Can you believe that?!
  • Let’s talk about physiology for a moment. Although bees are super tiny, this doesn’t mean they don’t have most of the organs we have. On the contrary, they do own oval-shaped brains that are the size of a sesame seed. However, these insects are thought to have a great memory when it comes to distance and movement.
  • In case you think there’s a gender division among animals as well, you’re right. Male bees, a.k.a. drones, are bigger, but they don’t have a sting and practically they don’t work. That’s why it’s only females that we use to call ‘workers’.

  • Honey has always been highly appreciated by people (and some animals like bears, of course!). There’s enough proof that this food might be able to help you treat a lot of diseases. In case you want to know more, read this article!
  • It’s said that honey’s natural sugars (fructose and glucose) are easily absorbed by the body. For this very reason most active athletes use honey as a natural power booster.
  • There’s a belief that honey is the only edible product that never goes bad. Researchers have even found a 2000-year-old honey jar in an Egyptian tomb, the taste of which was still amazing.

No matter what you do, a teaspoon of some high-quality honey will always bring you joy and pleasure to the senses.
